Resources

This page collates a number of resources that ASFP creates and maintains, both for editors and applicants. These resources are made available under the MIT License. You may freely use these resources, but if/when you do, we ask that you please credit ASFP, as our volunteers have worked very hard to create and improve these resources over several years.

Note that all materials are ‘living documents’ that we improve on and change every year. They will not be perfect or complete, and you should keep your common sense around you as you read and use them. They are also specific to the categories of PhD programs that ASFP supports, and may not apply to other degrees or types of programs.

The Official asfp rubric

All ASFP editors are trained to use the Official ASFP Rubric when providing feedback to applicants, and now you (or your advisors, mentors, and supporters) can use it too! You can see and download a PDF of the rubric here.

Editor training slides

All ASFP Editors undergo a detailed, hour-long training to efficiently provide effective and supportive feedback on applicant’s statements. These slides are the ones used in our training. Of course, our Editor Group Core Team Members who lead the training say more than is on the slides, often providing context, details, or important additional information. While we cannot share the video of the training itself, you can use these slides to improve your own statements or editing practice! You can see and download the PDF slides here.

Psychology Program Explainer

Sometimes it can feel daunting to navigate the complex landscape of graduate training in psychology! To help potential ASFP applicants through some of that process, we created a document that (briefly) summarizes some of the main differences between different graduate paths in psychology. You can view and download a PDF of the explainer here.

Tips & Tricks FOR Writing an Effective Application Statement

It can be daunting to start writing an application statement for a psychology PhD program, or even just understand what that statement should look like and try to do (and how it’s different from other statements an applicant may have written before). ASFP Core Team members from the Applicant Group wrote a guide to writing an application statement with lots of information and concrete tips to help you start, write, and polish a good statement! You can see and download the PDF here.

Other resources

Other, external resources for applicants are linked to from our Applicant and FAQ pages!

Software

The ASFP Core Team uses Slack to communicate and collaborate as a team spread across the country, Squarespace to create and host our website, and Google Workspaces (including Drive, Gmail, Sheets, Forms, Docs, Apps Scripts, etc.) to store and execute the documents and materials of the program. We also use some custom code to run portions of the ASFP process, freely available on GitHub.

More Coming soon!

More information & context about how ASFP works is coming soon! We’ll be sharing aspects of our process and information about how the Core Team coordinates and executes the program.
